Hop Brook Lake, man-made reservoir in Connecticut, United States
Hop Brook Lake is a large reservoir in Connecticut managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, located near Naugatuck, Waterbury, and Middlebury. The lake is surrounded by forests and meadows with almost ten miles of trails winding through the landscape and designated swimming areas along the shoreline.
The dam was built after the devastating 1955 flood to prevent similar flooding in the future. Since then, it has served both as a flood control structure and as a recreation area for surrounding communities.
The name Hop Brook Lake comes from the stream that feeds the reservoir. Over the years, it has become a gathering place where local families spend time together and connect with the natural world around them.
The area is open to vehicles Friday through Sunday and on holidays, while Monday through Thursday it welcomes walkers and bikers only. Large parking areas are near the main entrance at 4 Straits Turnpike, and packed trails suit many visitors, including families with young children.
Mixed forests of pines, maples, oaks, and hickories line the trails and provide habitat for hawks, turkeys, beavers, and ospreys. Visitors who watch carefully may spot these animals and many songbirds, especially during quiet mornings when wildlife is most active.
