Hudson River Islands State Park, State park on islands in Hudson River, New York.
Hudson River Islands State Park consists of two islands located in the Hudson River estuary: Stockport Middle Ground and Gay's Point. The combined landscape features willow thickets, marsh vegetation, and open water typical of estuarine environments.
The islands formed through natural sediment deposits from the Hudson River over thousands of years as part of the Stockport Flats area. In the 20th century, they were recognized for their ecological value and integrated into the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve system.
The islands invite visitors to experience the Hudson River landscape in its raw, undeveloped form, away from urban development. People come here to connect with the natural environment and observe how the river shapes the land around them.
Reaching the islands requires a private boat, as no bridges or public docks connect to the mainland. Visitors need to bring all necessary supplies and plan accordingly, since facilities and services are not available on the islands.
The islands host rare plant species adapted to estuarine conditions that are difficult to find elsewhere in the region. Scientists use these locations to study how river deltas function and respond to environmental changes.
