Ice Mountain

Ice Mountain is a 149-acre preserve featuring a talus slope on its southern face with rock layers reaching 50 feet thick. This unusual geology creates a natural cooling system that releases cold air throughout the year.

Before modern refrigeration was invented, Native Americans and early settlers relied on the mountain's natural cooling system to preserve food. This practical use made the place an important resource for survival and storage.

Local volunteers work to maintain the preserve and protect the eastern hemlocks that grow on the slopes. This ongoing effort shows how communities care for places with unusual natural features.

Visiting requires advance arrangements with The Nature Conservancy, as the preserve is only open to small groups. Plan your visit during warmer months when the trails are in better condition.

The mountain contains over 150 air vents that release cold air year-round. This unusual cooling creates conditions for Canadian and Subarctic plants to grow at much lower elevations than they normally would.
