Architects Schickel & Ditmars designed this residence for Isaac Stern, founder of the Stern Brothers department store, who lived there until his death in 1910. After Stern's passing, the property changed ownership to Thomas Fortune Ryan, a prominent businessman with interests in utilities and transportation ventures.
The mansion represented the economic success of retail entrepreneurs in New York City during the early 1900s, when Fifth Avenue emerged as a residential district.
The original building is no longer standing, having been demolished in 1949 and replaced by a modern apartment complex. Visitors can view the current site from Fifth Avenue to see how the location has changed over the decades.
Thomas Fortune Ryan, who acquired the property after Isaac Stern, expanded his business empire in utilities and transportation while residing at this address.
