Josiah Bartlett House, National Historic Landmark house in Kingston, US.
Josiah Bartlett House is a two-and-a-half-story wooden residence featuring Greek Revival elements, including corner pilasters and a front door framed by decorative columns. The structure retains many original architectural details from the late 18th century that remain visible throughout the building.
This residence was built in 1774 after the previous dwelling on the property burned down. The owner, a physician who signed the Declaration of Independence, constructed it in the Greek Revival style that was becoming fashionable at that time.
The parlor displays medical instruments from the 18th century that show how a physician worked during the American Revolution. These objects give you a sense of what medical practice looked like in that era.
Explore the house during daylight hours to properly appreciate the fine details and original features throughout the rooms. Comfortable footwear is recommended since there is considerable walking to do across the spacious grounds.
A linden tree growing on the grounds came from a sapling that Bartlett brought back from Philadelphia. This living connection to the Declaration signer offers a tangible link to an important moment in American history.
