Kennebec Highlands, Natural reserve in Maine, United States.
The Kennebec Highlands is a forest reserve spanning thousands of acres with multiple peaks and trail systems of varying difficulty. The terrain includes five undeveloped ponds and wetlands interspersed with dense woodlands that offer diverse options for exploration.
Protection of the area began in 1998 when the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance initiated land acquisition. Over the following years, four phases of purchase were completed, gradually expanding the reserve to its current extent.
The reserve serves as a place where local outdoor traditions like hiking, fishing, and hunting continue while wildlife corridors remain protected for bears, bobcats, moose, and lynx. This balance reflects how the community values both recreation and animal habitat.
The main access point is the Watson Pond Road parking area, where multiple trails begin. Routes range from gentle to challenging, allowing visitors to choose based on their ability and interests.
The reserve protects water quality across two major watershed systems, the Belgrade Lakes and Sandy River basins. This behind-the-scenes ecological role often goes unnoticed by visitors but proves essential to the region's water resources.
