Kate Douglas Wiggin House, Historic house in Hollis, Maine
The Kate Douglas Wiggin House is a two-and-a-half-story wooden building with a symmetrical front and sloped roof in the classical style. The structure features five evenly spaced window openings across the front facade and a side addition from a later period.
The building was constructed in 1797 and originally served as a private residence for a local family. In 1905 a noted author moved in and made it home for the next two decades.
The interior walls display paintings created by a local artist in the early 1800s that remain visible today. One upstairs room features a curved ceiling showing how the space once served a different purpose for gatherings and events.
The rooms are organized with living spaces toward the front and sleeping quarters along with the kitchen in the back section. This layout helps visitors understand how the building was designed for both social and daily household needs.
A 1905 addition features a balcony overlooking a projecting window alcove from the sitting room below. This architectural detail connects the original structure with the later expansion in an unexpected way.
