L'Enfant Plan, Urban planning model in Washington D.C., United States

The L'Enfant Plan established a grid system of streets intersected by diagonal avenues, creating a network of public spaces throughout Washington D.C.

President George Washington commissioned French architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant in 1791 to design the layout of the new American capital city.

The arrangement of buildings, structures, and vistas in the plan reflects the democratic values and federal structure of the United States government.

The plan designated specific locations for the Capitol Building and White House, connected by a 400-foot-wide avenue that became the National Mall.

The design incorporates Baroque city planning principles with radiating avenues and parks, making it the only such comprehensive urban layout in America.
