Newseum, News and journalism museum on Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC, United States.
The Newseum was a journalism museum on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington that spanned seven floors and 250,000 square feet of exhibition space. The building contained fifteen theaters and fourteen separate gallery sections dedicated to the history and practice of news reporting.
The museum opened in Arlington in 1997 and moved to a new building in Washington in 2008, where it operated until December 2019. Johns Hopkins University purchased the building and ended the operation of the museum in this form.
The Journalists Memorial honored reporters who lost their lives while covering stories, creating a quiet space within the exhibition floors. Visitors could read the names of those who died and view photographs that showed the commitment these individuals made to reporting.
The building stood centrally on Pennsylvania Avenue between the Capitol and the White House and was accessible via several Metro lines. Visitors needed several hours to explore the seven floors and the many interactive areas throughout the space.
The Berlin Wall Gallery displayed the largest collection of original wall segments outside Germany and documented the role of media in reporting the fall of the wall. Visitors could stand between the concrete segments and observe the graffiti and inscriptions from different decades.
