Landmark Mall, Retail center in Alexandria, Virginia, US
Landmark Mall was a three-story shopping center at the intersection of Duke Street and Interstate 395, featuring 675,000 square feet of retail space. The complex offered parking for about 4,000 vehicles, multiple department stores, a third-floor food court, and a children's play area on the ground level.
The shopping center opened in 1965 as an outdoor plaza with 32 stores. A major renovation in 1990 transformed it into a modern three-level enclosed retail complex.
The mall served as a filming location for Wonder Woman 1984, with storefronts and decorations recreating the retail experience of the 1980s. Visitors could walk through these recreated shops and feel the atmosphere of that era.
The location provided diverse shopping and dining options at an easily accessible spot near Interstate 395. Families with children could use the dedicated play area, while visitors could move through multiple levels to explore all the stores and food options.
After closing in 2017, part of the complex temporarily became a homeless shelter before demolition started in 2022. This shift shows how vacant shopping centers sometimes served unexpected community needs.
