Linchester Mill, Historic grist mill in Preston, Maryland
The red-painted weatherboard building stretches across four bays in length and two bays in depth, featuring a two-story lean-to extension.
Initially constructed in 1682, the current structure dates from 1840 and operated continuously until its closure in 1974, processing grains for local communities.
The mill site became a meeting point where free and enslaved individuals intersected daily, serving multiple functions including a general store and post office.
Located at 3395 Linchester Road in Preston, the facility now houses an extensive collection of milling machinery from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The mill dam served as a crucial crossing point over Hunting Creek for individuals seeking freedom through the Underground Railroad network.
