Linchester Mill, Historic grist mill in Preston, Maryland
Linchester Mill is a wooden watermill with red-painted weatherboard siding in Preston, Maryland, measuring four bays long and two bays deep with a two-story lean-to addition. The structure now contains an extensive collection of 19th and 20th century milling machinery that demonstrates how grain processing operated.
An original mill existed on this site from 1682, but the current building was constructed in 1840 and operated continuously to process grains for surrounding communities. Operations continued until the facility closed in 1974.
The mill served as a gathering spot where community members conducted daily business and connected with neighbors beyond grain milling operations. It functioned as both a commercial and social center for the surrounding area.
The mill is located at 3395 Linchester Road in Preston and is easy to reach by car. Allow time to explore the various machines on display and understand how grain milling operated throughout the facility.
The mill dam functioned as a critical crossing point over Hunting Creek for people seeking freedom along the Underground Railroad. This made the location a vital waypoint for those escaping slavery.
