Martin Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places
The Martin Hotel is a large historic building constructed in 1912 in downtown Sioux City at the corner of Fourth and Pierce Streets. It originally contained 350 rooms and was expanded in 1918, featuring a grand ballroom, restaurant, cafeteria, and various retail shops throughout the space.
The building was constructed in 1912 by the Martin brothers and completed in 1913 to accommodate visitors attending the Interstate Fair and other events. After decades of hotel operation, it was converted into apartments in 1981 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since then.
The hotel served as a social hub where the community gathered for celebrations and events. The ballroom hosted weddings, dances, and formal gatherings that brought residents together throughout its years of operation.
The building is centrally located and easily accessible through a skywalk and parking ramp. This location makes it simple to walk to other downtown areas and explore the surrounding neighborhood on foot.
Hidden within the building is a mural titled 'The Corn Room' painted in 1927 by artist Grant Wood. The artwork remained buried under layers of paint for decades before being rediscovered in 1979 and is now displayed in the local arts center.
