Mayo Medical School, Private nonprofit university focused on biomedical research and graduate-level education.
Mayo Medical School is a private medical college in Rochester, Minnesota, directly connected to Mayo Clinic. It offers simulation laboratories and access to one of the largest medical libraries in the world, giving students direct exposure to a major hospital environment.
The school opened in 1972 with a first class of 40 students, created to train doctors for Mayo Clinic. In 2018 it was renamed Alix School of Medicine after a major donation, and it later expanded to campuses in Arizona and Florida.
At ceremonies, students wear formal clothing rather than white coats, a tradition that reflects the school's sense of professional identity. Many students also take part in arts programs during their studies, which are seen as a natural part of life on campus.
The campus is spread across several buildings in downtown Rochester, all reachable on foot or by a free shuttle. Parking on site is limited, so using public transit or one of the city's park-and-ride options is a practical choice for visitors.
During the first two years, students are given around 28 weeks of elective time to explore areas of medicine that interest them. This time can go toward research, observing specialists, or specialized training, and grants are available to fund travel for research projects.
