The 45-acre facility features diverse habitats including Lake Victoria, Amazonia rainforest exhibits, and rolling hills with pathways connecting animal enclosures and garden areas.
The zoo, established in 1928 by Gilmore M. Haynie and local business leaders, began with two lion cubs, antelope, and an elephant as initial animal residents.
The Discovery Center provides educational programs about wildlife conservation while displaying endangered species and conducting research on animal preservation techniques.
The facility operates daily from 9 AM to 4 PM, with winter admission prices set at 9 dollars for adults and 8 dollars for children aged three to twelve.
In 2008, the zoo completed a 15 million dollar tropical rainforest expansion, which attracted over 38,000 visitors during its first month of operation.
