Meyer May House, Prairie School residence in Heritage Hill Historic District, Grand Rapids, United States
The Meyer May House is a home in the Heritage Hill Historic District in Grand Rapids designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its exterior shows long horizontal lines, light brick walls, and large art glass windows that create a quiet connection with the surrounding landscape.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the building in 1908 for Meyer May, and construction was finished in 1909. After decades of decline, furniture manufacturer Steelcase purchased the house in 1987 and restored it completely to Wright's original plans.
The name honors Meyer May, a furniture retailer who lived here and worked closely with Wright on every detail of the design. Today the interior displays faithfully reproduced furniture and textiles that let visitors see how architecture and furnishings work as a single whole.
Steelcase offers free guided tours through the residence that give visitors a detailed look at the fully restored rooms. Booking ahead is recommended because tours often fill up and group size is limited.
The radiators sit behind wooden grills so they blend into the overall design without drawing attention. Both brick fireplaces also carry narrow strips of gold art glass set directly into the mortar joints.
