Moore State Park, Public recreation area in Paxton, Massachusetts.
Moore State Park is a nature reserve of roughly 300 acres that contains remains of five former watermills and a restored sawmill. A brook runs through the grounds creating waterfalls, while wooded trails wind through the property connecting different areas.
The land served as a mill site between 1747 and the early 1900s, powered by the steep drops of the local brook. When these operations ceased, the forest gradually returned, though the foundations of those mills remain visible throughout the grounds today.
The park's name comes from a family that shaped the mill operations and settlement here over generations. You can still find their influence woven throughout the landscape as you explore the remains of their industrial past.
The park is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset year-round and welcomes hiking, fishing, picnicking, and other outdoor activities. Bring good walking shoes and water since the trails cover wooded terrain and some paths can be muddy or uneven.
The grounds host an experimental tree planting project with specially bred chestnuts that began in the early 2000s. These trees were developed to resist a disease that devastated native chestnut forests across the region.
