Mount St. Joseph Academy
Mount St. Joseph Academy, Educational historic site in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Mount St. Joseph Academy is a four-story brick and stone structure with Colonial Revival architecture designed by John J. Dwyer in West Hartford. The building sits on a 29-acre landscaped hilltop site at the junction of Fern Street and Hamilton Avenue.
The site was established in 1908 and operated as a Catholic girls school by the Sisters of Mercy until 1978. After the school closed, the building was converted into an assisted living residence, opening in that new role in 1996.
The building displays Georgian Revival style through its E-shaped layout, central projecting entry with gabled pediment, and columned portico design elements. These architectural features remain visible today and shape how the place feels when you walk around it.
The site is located in a hilly area and can be accessed via Hamilton Heights Drive, where the main entrance is found. The property is spacious and offers plenty of room to explore, with the main building as the focal point.
The building was designed by John J. Dwyer, a notable regional architect whose work shows attention to craftsmanship in its original lobby features. This careful execution reflects the quality placed on school buildings of that era.
