Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace, Historic author's residence in Salem, Massachusetts, United States.
The Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace is a two-story wooden house with a gambrel roof and a central chimney, situated on the grounds of The House of the Seven Gables complex in Salem, Massachusetts. The building dates to the early 1700s and follows a traditional colonial layout, with original staircases and rooms that remain largely intact.
The building was put up between 1730 and 1745 for ship captain Joshua Pickman and originally stood on Union Street in Salem. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born there in 1804, which gave the house its place in American literary history.
The house draws visitors who are curious about early American writing and the world that shaped one of its most recognized authors. The modest interior gives a sense of how a middle-class family in early 19th-century Salem arranged their daily life.
The house sits on Hardy Street as part of The House of the Seven Gables complex, which makes it easy to visit alongside other buildings on the same grounds. Tours of the birthplace are typically guided, so arriving early in the day gives more flexibility with timing.
The entire building was moved in 1958 from its original spot on Union Street to its current location next to the Turner-Ingersoll mansion. Moving a whole house of this age was rare at the time and shows how much effort went into keeping it standing.
