Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum, Railroad museum in Fall River, Massachusetts
The Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum preserves four historic train cars including a Pennsylvania Railroad P-70B, a New Haven RDC, a New York Central Caboose, and a New Haven Boxcar. The cars sit at Water Street near Battleship Cove and represent different types of rail transport from various eras.
The museum was founded in 1986 to document the Old Colony Railroad system that operated from 1845 to 1893 and connected Boston with Plymouth and other Massachusetts cities. This railroad was among the first in the region and helped build the early transport network in the East.
The site shows how rail and ship transport worked together to move passengers between Boston and New York. Visitors can see how the Fall River Line transferred travelers directly from trains to steamships.
The museum is located at Water Street near Battleship Cove and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should note that the site closed in 2016 and may not be regularly accessible.
The museum sits directly across from the former Fall River Line Terminal, where train connections combined with steamship travel. This unusual setup let travelers transfer between different modes of transport without changing locations.
