Old Ohavi Zedek Synagogue
Old Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, Conservative Jewish synagogue in Burlington, United States
The Old Ohavi Zedek Synagogue is a religious building in Burlington designed with Gothic Revival features including arched windows and a peaked roof. The interior contains a women's section lit by round windows, and the focal point is an ornate Torah ark decorated with classical motifs and gilded lion figures.
The building was constructed in 1885 for a congregation of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The structure underwent enlargement and brick cladding in 1902, replacing its original wooden exterior.
The name reflects the Lithuanian Jewish roots of its original congregation, and the building still displays craftsmanship from its founding era. Visitors can observe the ornate Torah ark, which combines classical design elements with religious symbols that held meaning for the community.
The building is located at the intersection of Archibald and Hyde Streets and is easy to reach on foot. Access to the interior may be limited, so it is advisable to inquire in advance about whether tours or visits are available.
The building is notable because its original wooden structure was completely hidden beneath a new brick facade added during the 1902 renovation. This technique was a common way to give older buildings a more updated appearance.
