Pagoda, Historic landmark on Mount Penn in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Pagoda is a seven-story wooden and stone structure on Mount Penn in Reading, Pennsylvania. The building reaches roughly 72 feet in height and displays curved rooflines along with several observation decks overlooking the surrounding countryside.
The structure arose in 1908 as part of a luxury resort project that never came to fruition and was donated to the city of Reading in 1911. It received listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
The bell cast in 1739 comes from Mie Prefecture and displays Japanese characters naming 48 donors alongside a time prophecy. Visitors can walk onto the observation decks originally planned as part of a resort and now open to the public.
The building sits roughly 620 feet above the city and offers views extending across much of the Pennsylvania countryside. The curved stairways and levels suit visitors who want to explore the grounds on foot.
LED lights trace the rooflines at night and make the structure visible from a distance. A webcam on the third floor streams weather data from the mountain and allows a live look at current conditions on site.
