Piney Run Park, Nature park in Sykesville, Maryland.
Piney Run Park is a nature preserve in Sykesville with 550 acres of forests, meadows, and a large lake. The grounds offer about 15 miles of marked hiking trails and facilities for fishing, boating, and picnicking.
The land was originally private farmland and became a public park in 1964. This change was part of a regional project to manage water supply and control flooding in Carroll County.
The Nature Center hosts year-round guided walks and workshops where visitors learn about local wildlife and plant species. Schools and families use these programs to understand the natural world around them.
The park has clearly marked entrances and ample parking in several locations. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as trails vary in difficulty and ground conditions change with the seasons and weather.
A striking steel sculpture of a Great Blue Heron by artist Virginia Sperry has stood near the boathouse since 2018. This modern art installation adds an unexpected creative element to the natural surroundings.
