Piney Run Park, Nature park in Sykesville, Maryland.
Piney Run Park is a protected natural area in Sykesville, Maryland, centered around a large reservoir surrounded by forests and open meadows. The grounds include marked hiking trails and facilities for fishing, boating, and picnicking.
The land was originally private farmland before it became a public park in 1964 as part of a regional project to manage water supply and control flooding in Carroll County. The dam that created the reservoir was the central element of that project.
The Nature Center inside the park runs guided walks and hands-on workshops throughout the year, where visitors get to know local wildlife and native plants. Families and school groups come regularly to take part in these programs.
The park has several marked entrances with ample parking nearby. Trail conditions can change with the season, so sturdy footwear is a good idea regardless of the time of year.
A life-size steel sculpture of a Great Blue Heron by artist Virginia Sperry has stood near the boathouse since 2018, surprising visitors who come across it among the trees. The heron is a bird commonly seen along the lake shore, so the sculpture connects directly to what visitors might spot during a walk.
