Pine Grove Covered Bridge
Pine Grove Covered Bridge, Covered bridge in Little Britain Township and East Nottingham Township, Pennsylvania.
Pine Grove Covered Bridge is a wooden crossing that spans the East Branch of Octoraro Creek and connects Lancaster County with Chester County. It features red walls and white approaches along with a special oak plank floor laid perpendicular to the direction of travel.
The bridge was built in 1884 and replaced an earlier structure from 1846 that was destroyed by flooding. The new construction was designed to provide a permanent and reliable crossing at this waterway.
The bridge displays the classic design of a wooden covered structure with red walls and white approaches that visitors immediately recognize. This color scheme is typical for such crossings in the region and makes it a recurring sight in the landscape.
The bridge is open to public traffic and connects the two counties on either side. Visitors should note they are crossing a historic structure with special features that may require adjusted driving.
This is the longest such structure in Lancaster County and remains the only two-span example still open to public traffic. This distinction makes it a notable example among its counterparts in the region.
