Priest Wilderness

Priest Wilderness is a protected forest area in the Appalachians that spans several thousand acres and takes hikers through rolling terrain. The landscape features forested sections, open areas, and varying elevations that you feel as you walk the trails.

The area was designated by the US Congress as a protected wilderness area in 2000 to preserve its natural state. This designation recognized the importance of protecting forest landscapes from development.

The Appalachian Trail passes through this area and connects hikers to a network of paths that reflect how Americans engage with backcountry travel. Many visitors view the trails here as part of a long tradition of self-guided mountain exploration.

Visitors should bring water, food, and navigation tools since there are no facilities along the trails. Proper preparation and suitable footwear are important for a safe hiking experience.

The climb to the summit includes over 30 switchbacks within a two-mile section, making the steep ascent less exhausting. These numerous turns allow hikers to maintain a steady pace instead of tackling long, straight sections.
