Red Bank Battlefield, Revolutionary War battlefield and historic site in National Park, New Jersey
Red Bank Battlefield is a 44-acre park along the Delaware River that contains the remains of Fort Mercer, historical monuments, and cannons from the war. The Georgian-style Whitall House stands on the grounds and displays period furnishings and domestic objects.
The fort was built in 1777 and became the site of a crucial battle against Hessian soldiers during the Revolutionary War. American forces successfully defended the position, which helped protect supply lines for the broader war effort.
The Whitall House displays furnishings and objects from the 18th century that show how colonial families lived in this region. Visitors can see the daily routines and domestic spaces that existed during the Revolutionary War period.
The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset and free to explore at your own pace. The Whitall House has limited hours, operating only Thursday through Sunday from April to October, so plan your visit accordingly.
In 2022, archaeologists uncovered the remains of 13 Hessian soldiers on the grounds, revealing new details about those who fought in the 1777 battle. This discovery provides insight into the experience of soldiers who fought for the opposing side.
