Red River Army Depot, military installation in Bowie County, Texas, USA
Red River Army Depot is a military base in Bowie County, Texas, located about 18 miles west of Texarkana and covering 15,000 acres where military vehicles are repaired and maintained daily. The site has large buildings, repair shops, and warehouses where trucks, tanks, and other vehicles are continuously serviced.
The base was founded in 1941 during World War II and initially served as an ammunition storage facility but quickly expanded into a comprehensive repair and maintenance operation. Multiple closure attempts in 1995 and 2005 failed because the Army still needed its services, making the depot a permanent part of the defense infrastructure.
The depot's name comes from the Red River, which runs through the area and forms the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma. Workers and visitors see the industrial character of the site, where military repair work defines the daily rhythm and gives the place its sense of purpose.
Visitors and new arrivals must check in at the Visitor Control Center to receive a badge and register. You will need a driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration, with the center open Monday through Thursday during business hours.
The depot was the first military facility in the Army to receive the VPP Star safety program and was designated as a Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence. Its craftsmanship tradition traces back to producing nearly 3 million track shoes and over 700,000 road wheels in the 1950s.
