Red Rock Mountain Natural Area Preserve, Nature reserve in Smyth County, Virginia, United States.
Red Rock Mountain Natural Area Preserve is a protected nature reserve with distinctive red siltstone cliffs and forested slopes in southwestern Virginia. The landscape includes rocky outcrops, wooded valleys, and open ridgelines spread across 640 acres.
The preserve was established by Virginia's conservation agency to protect rare plant communities and distinctive geological features of the Ridge and Valley region. The land transitioned from logging operations to protected status to maintain its natural ecosystem.
The preserve maintains five rare plant species including spring blue-eyed Mary, fringed scorpion-weed, and Carey saxifrage, representing Virginia's natural heritage.
Entry requires advance permission from a state land steward who manages the area. Plan to contact the steward well ahead since visitor facilities are not yet developed.
A 96-acre expansion in 2016 connected this preserve to adjacent wildlife management areas and created ecological corridors. The addition allows animal populations to move more freely between protected lands in the region.
