Staunton High School, high school in Virginia, United States
Staunton High School is a school building in Colonial Revival style constructed in 1926 on a hillside overlooking a major intersection in downtown Staunton. Designed by local firm T.J. Collins and Sons in collaboration with renowned school architect William Butts Ittner, the brick structure features symmetrical windows, classical proportions, and well-preserved original details throughout.
The school opened in 1926 as Staunton's first separate high school and operated until 1983, when it was converted into residential apartments. Wings added in 1954 expanded its capacity to serve more students and meet evolving educational needs.
The building expresses how much the community valued education in the early 20th century and continues to shape how people see Staunton today. Its prominent location on a hill and careful design were meant to inspire students and show the town's commitment to learning.
The building sits on a hilltop and is visible from the street, allowing visitors to view its architecture and exterior from public areas. Since it is now privately owned residential apartments, visitors should remain outside and respect the residents' privacy.
After decades of service as a school, the building closed in 1983 and was later transformed into residential apartments now called Gypsy Hill Place. This conversion demonstrates how historic structures can be repurposed for new uses while retaining their architectural character.
