Beverley Historic District, Historic district in downtown Staunton, Virginia.
Beverley Historic District is a downtown neighborhood in Staunton with about 131 brick buildings ranging from two to four stories tall. The structures display Romanesque Revival and Italianate architectural features.
The district grew from Staunton's economic expansion between 1870 and 1920, when trade and industry thrived. Its listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 recognized its historical importance.
The commercial buildings here show how merchants and craftspeople lived and worked in the 1800s. You can still see the storefronts and entrances that were typical of that era.
You can reach the district via Route 250 and find parking at the New Street Garage or along Beverley Street with a two-hour limit. The area is easy to explore on foot and most buildings are visible from the street.
The Market Street Hotel from 1924 still preserves its original marble floors and houses one of the few working Wurlitzer organs on its mezzanine level. This rare instrument can still be heard playing during visits.
