Staunton

Staunton is an independent city in Virginia serving as an administrative and cultural center for the region. The downtown features red-brick sidewalks and historic Victorian buildings that now house shops, restaurants, and apartments.

The settlement was founded in 1747 and briefly served as Virginia's capital in 1781 when legislators fled during the advance of British forces. These events occurred during the American Revolution.

The American Shakespeare Center operates the Blackfriars Playhouse, a faithful reproduction of Shakespeare's indoor theater, where classical performances take place. The stage uses candlelight and natural acoustics to give visitors an authentic Elizabethan theater experience.

The city is accessible via main highways and offers occasional rail service for longer distances. Paved paths and parking spaces are found throughout the area to help with getting around.

This is the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, and his house still displays original furnishings and family portraits from the 19th century. The personal spaces offer insights into daily life during that historical period.
