Riverview Terrace Historic District, Historic district in Davenport, United States.
Riverview Terrace Historic District is a protected neighborhood with around 21 buildings arranged along Clay Street and surrounding streets, displaying various architectural styles including Italianate, Georgian, and Federal designs. The brick-paved streets and the houses themselves reflect different periods of the city's growth and development.
The neighborhood started in the 1850s when an early Italianate residence was built as an isolated structure in what was then the countryside. The area began to grow more significantly from the 1880s onward, and these historic buildings were recognized and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
This neighborhood became a home for German-American families who played important roles in developing Davenport's business life. Walking through the streets today, you can still see how these families shaped the character of the area through the houses they built.
This neighborhood is best explored on foot, using the brick-paved streets to really take in the historic setting. It helps to start from Fillmore Street and walk northwest toward the former college campus to see how the district is laid out and experience it at a natural pace.
One of the earliest structures in this area was an Italianate mansion called Clifton, which stood completely alone from 1853 until the 1880s. This solitary house shows how the neighborhood gradually filled in and developed around it over time.
