Wolters Filling Station
Wolters Filling Station, Historical filling station in West End, Davenport, United States.
Wolters Filling Station is a filling station built in English Cottage style in Davenport, Iowa, featuring polychrome brick walls, metal casement windows, and stone-arched doorways. The roofline and gables display half-timbered elements, while sturdy posts mark where the drive-through once operated.
Alfred Wolters built this filling station in 1930, and his son Dick later operated it as a Standard franchise station. The fuel pumps were eventually removed, though the building structure remained intact.
This filling station reflects the home-like architectural style that became common in early twentieth-century America as service buildings for car owners began to appear. You can still see this character in how the building was designed.
The building is located on Washington Street in the West End neighborhood and now houses various businesses, including a hair salon. Access is from the regular street, and the exterior retains many original architectural features worth observing from the sidewalk.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 as recognition of its importance as an early service station design. This designation came as part of a broader assessment of multiple historic resources in Davenport.
