Salem Speedway, Racetrack in Indiana, USA
Salem Speedway is a motorsport racing track in Salem, Indiana, built as a paved high-banked half-mile (about 0.8 km) oval. The steep banking in the corners sets it apart from most short tracks of the same length and makes it one of the faster ovals in that category.
The track opened in 1947, making it one of the oldest paved short ovals still operating in the country. Over the following decades it became a regular stop on regional racing circuits and drew drivers from across the Midwest.
The banking on the turns is among the steepest of any short oval track in the country, which pushes cars to much higher speeds through the corners than most tracks allow. Fans sitting near the turns get a raw, close-up view of cars pushing through those banked sections at full speed.
Checking the event schedule in advance is a good idea since some nights feature only specific car classes, and the type of racing changes from event to event. Seating is largely outdoors, so dressing for the weather and bringing sun protection or a layer for cooler evenings makes the visit more comfortable.
Despite being a short oval, the track has recorded lap speeds that rival much longer ovals, a fact that surprises many first-time visitors who expect slower racing at this length. Several drivers who later moved up to national series began their careers competing here.
