The school opened in 1959 and held its first graduation in 1961. In 2013, the New York City school district approved plans to close the school and replace it with four smaller schools operating from the same building, which took place in 2016.
The school served as a gathering place for students from many different backgrounds and cultures. This diversity was visible in daily life, creating an environment where people from various communities came together to learn and build friendships.
The building is located on Avenue X, a major street in Brooklyn, and is easy to reach by local buses and subway lines. The site is well-integrated into the neighborhood, with shops, parks, and residential areas nearby.
The school used a shark as its mascot with school colors of blue, orange, and white, which created strong pride among students and staff. Several notable alumni, including comedian Larry David and musician Young M.A., went on to make their mark in entertainment and music.
