Sikorsky Memorial Airport, airport in Connecticut, United States of America
Sikorsky Memorial Airport is an airport in Stratford, Connecticut, with two paved runways across a large, flat expanse. It is owned by the city of Bridgeport and serves mostly private aircraft, helicopters, and smaller commercial flights today.
The site was originally Avon Field and hosted the nation's first air show in 1911, later becoming Mollison Field. After the city acquired it in 1937, it was renamed Bridgeport Municipal Airport and then Sikorsky Memorial in 1972 to honor the aircraft manufacturer who based his company here.
The airport honors Igor Sikorsky, an engineer who established his helicopter and aircraft company here in 1929. The name reflects the deep connection between this location and aviation innovation that shaped the local community.
The airport is easy to reach and located about seven kilometers southeast of Bridgeport near Stratford. The grounds are open and flat, making orientation simple, and you can watch runway activity and flight operations from various spots around the property.
The airport operates a helicopter port that enables quick flights to nearby locations such as New York City. Occasionally, blimps and airships are moored on the grounds for advertising campaigns or special event fly-overs.
