South of the Border, Roadside attraction and amusement park in Dillon County, South Carolina
South of the Border is a roadside attraction and amusement complex in Dillon County, South Carolina, covering more than 350 acres. An observation tower reaching about 200 feet includes a viewing platform, alongside restaurants, souvenir shops, and entertainment facilities along Interstate 95.
Alan Schafer opened the site in 1950 as a small beer stand near the state border. Over the following decades, the operation grew into a sprawling complex with numerous buildings and facilities.
The site takes its name and theme from its location just south of the North Carolina border. Visitors encounter numerous colorful statues and figures distributed across the entire grounds.
The complex sits directly along Interstate 95 and offers overnight stays in a motel, gas stations, a campground with full hookup sites, and several dining options. The tower provides a wide view over the flat surrounding region.
The Reptile Lagoon houses a large collection of crocodilians and snakes in an indoor hall. The exhibition displays species from different continents in terrariums and enclosures.
