Sky Fence, Aluminum sculpture at Lynden Sculpture Garden in Milwaukee, United States
Sky Fence is an aluminum sculpture at Lynden Sculpture Garden featuring vertical louvered elements that form a passage you can walk through. The structure measures about 21 feet (6.5 meters) tall and frames views of the surrounding landscape as you move around it.
Linda Howard created this sculpture in 1976, and it became a permanent installation at Lynden Sculpture Garden the following year. The work was made during a period when artists began introducing large-scale metal sculptures into American public gardens.
The sculpture represents the first generation of large-scale aluminum art installations in American public gardens during the 1970s modernist movement.
You can walk through the open passage and experience the sculpture from different angles as you move around it. The work is accessible year-round since it sits on the garden grounds without barriers.
The aluminum surface reflects light differently as the sun moves across the sky, causing the sculpture to appear to change throughout the day. This effect gives the work a living quality that shifts with the changing hours.
