Kumo, Steel sculpture in Lynden Sculpture Garden, Milwaukee, US
Kumo is an abstract steel sculpture with curved forms made of Corten steel, positioned on the 40-acre grounds of Lynden Sculpture Garden. The work occupies a space designed for viewing from multiple angles within the collection of outdoor modern artworks.
Isaac Witkin created this steel work in 1970 as the garden was expanding its outdoor collection. The sculpture came into being during a period when the institution was actively acquiring modern artworks for its grounds.
The sculpture contributes to the collection of over 50 monumental artworks at Lynden Sculpture Garden, selected by Margaret Bradley between 1962 and 1978.
You can access the work anytime since it sits on the openly accessible grounds of the garden. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven and paths wind through natural landscape throughout the site.
The Corten steel material changes its appearance through natural oxidation, developing an evolving surface finish. This transformation is part of the artwork itself, distinguishing it from polished or sealed steel.
