WITI TV Tower, Television tower in Shorewood, United States
The WITI TV Tower is a television and communications facility in Shorewood with a three-sided lattice structure rising approximately 330 meters tall. The structure transmits signals for the Fox station WITI channel 6, several radio stations, and provides cellular and wireless coverage across the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
The facility was completed in 1962 and held the title of tallest free-standing structure in the United States for more than 30 years. This record ended with the construction of the Stratosphere Tower in 1996.
The tower became known as 'Milwaukee's Tower of Light' after lights were added to its structure in the 1960s. These illuminations have made it a visual landmark that locals use to navigate the city.
The facility sits in Shorewood, a community north of Milwaukee, and is visible from multiple points across the region. Visitors can approach the area surrounding the tower, but note that the installation itself is not open for public tours or access.
The structure is the world's tallest three-sided lattice tower and was built without guy wires because its location near Estabrook Park made their use impossible. This engineering solution made it a notable example of how design constraints can drive innovation.
