Herman Uihlein House
Herman Uihlein House, Renaissance Revival mansion in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.
The Herman Uihlein House is a Renaissance Revival residence in Whitefish Bay with limestone walls, a hip roof, and nine bedrooms along with eight bathrooms. The interior features eight types of marble throughout its formal entertaining spaces, leading to modern additions like a media room and updated kitchen.
Built between 1917 and 1919 for Herman Uihlein, whose father led the Schlitz Brewing Company, the house rose on the former grounds of the Pabst Whitefish Bay Resort. This period marked the height of industrial wealth in Wisconsin and the creation of exclusive neighborhoods for prominent families.
The mansion reflects the tastes of the wealthy industrial family who commissioned it, with architectural choices that echo European traditions adapted for American wealth. The craftsmanship visible throughout the rooms shows how local artisans brought European design standards to Wisconsin.
The property spreads across multiple levels with gardens and sits elevated above Lake Michigan with views of the water. Comfortable shoes are useful for exploring the terraces and grounds, especially if you want to take in the views from the upper sections.
The property features a custom garden pool with fountains and multiple water features that provided the family with private leisure spaces overlooking the lake. The lakefront location gave residents direct access to water activities that were available to only the wealthiest households in the region.
