Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Greek Orthodox church in Wauwatosa, United States.
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church is a Greek Orthodox house of worship in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The building shows a circular dome in blue tones rising over a bowl-shaped base made of curved concrete, while geometric patterns decorate the outer walls.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the building in 1956, shortly before his death, and work was completed in 1961. The project came during his final years and stands among his few religious commissions.
The name honors the biblical announcement to Mary, a central event in Orthodox faith. Visitors today notice the incense during liturgy and hear the polyphonic Byzantine chant without instrumental accompaniment.
The church sits on North 92nd Street and remains accessible during regular worship hours. Architecture tours can be arranged by prior agreement to view the interior spaces and construction details more closely.
Wright drew inspiration from the round forms of Greek churches but used modern building materials instead of traditional ones. The dome appears to float without visible supporting columns, made possible by hidden steel beams inside the concrete.
