Gear 23, Public sculpture at Milwaukee Fire Department Engine Company 4, US.
Gear 23 is a steel and mosaic sculpture located at the Milwaukee Fire Department Engine Company 4 station. The work displays four firefighter helmets on an upper shelf, with coats hanging below and boots arranged at the base, representing a complete set of equipment.
Steven Feren created this memorial sculpture in 1992 to honor firefighters who lost their lives serving at Engine Company 4. The artwork emerged from the community's desire to permanently recognize these individuals.
Each helmet carries the name of a firefighter who died in the line of duty, serving as a permanent tribute to their sacrifice. The work invites visitors to reflect on the courage and dedication required in this profession.
The sculpture stands directly outside the fire station entrance and is visible and accessible at all times. The best view is achieved by standing a few steps away from the facade to take in the entire composition.
The work incorporates brass poles, colorful mosaics, and steel textures to recreate a firefighter's gear closet with exact detail. This attention to authenticity transforms an everyday equipment space into a profound memorial.
