Dauntless Guardian, Bronze sculpture at Engine Company 9, Milwaukee, US
The Dauntless Guardian is a bronze figurative sculpture located at the Engine Company 9 fire station in Milwaukee. The roughly three-meter-tall statue depicts a firefighter extending both arms upward to rescue a child from a windowsill during an emergency.
The sculptor Jeune Nowak Wussow created this work in 1984 on commission from the City of Milwaukee. The piece was publicly dedicated on October 8 of that year and has remained an integral part of the fire station since.
The sculpture depicts a firefighter in a rescue moment that resonates with residents who witness these courageous actions in their community. It serves as a public expression of gratitude toward those who risk themselves to help others in emergencies.
The sculpture stands in front of the fire station at 4141 West Mill Road and is easily visible from the street. You can view this public monument anytime since it is located in an accessible public area.
Alderman James Kondziella selected artist Wussow for the project after keeping an early design sketch on his City Hall desk for years. This unexpected connection shows how personal interest in art can lead to a significant public monument.
