St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, Rectory, Convent, and School
St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, Rectory, Convent, and School, Roman Catholic church complex on West Market Street, Louisville, Kentucky, United States.
St. Anthony is a church complex featuring a red brick structure built in Gothic Revival style, with a rectory, convent, and school building occupying a large property in Louisville. The different buildings are arranged as a cohesive ensemble, representing the kind of parish center that served both spiritual and educational needs for the community.
The original structure was built in 1887 following designs by architect William H. Redin and served the community for more than 50 years. A major fire in 1939 necessitated reconstruction led by architect Walter C. Wagner Sr., who maintained the original Gothic style while strengthening the building.
The church has long served as a gathering place for the Catholic community in the neighborhood, drawing Irish and German immigrant families over many decades. St. Anthony's name reflects a deep spiritual tradition that connected families to their faith and heritage.
The grounds are extensive, so allow time to walk around and view the different buildings and their arrangement. The location on West Market Street is accessible by local transportation and parking is readily available in the surrounding area.
The 1939 fire left deep marks on the structure, but the reconstruction was executed so skillfully that the new sections blend seamlessly into the original construction. Visitors today can rarely tell which parts are original and which are rebuilt, demonstrating the craftsmanship of the restoration work.
