St. Peter's Catholic Church
St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gothic Revival Catholic church in Council Bluffs, United States
St. Peter's is a Gothic Revival church in Council Bluffs, Iowa featuring pointed arches and a brick facade with architectural details from the late 1800s. The structure includes a central bell tower, ribbed vault ceilings, and symmetric proportions that frame the interior worship space.
German immigrants established this church in 1887, followed by a rectory in 1895 designed by architect Mathias Schnell. Both structures were completed within a decade as the foundation of the parish.
German Catholic families built this community from the ground up, pooling resources to establish their congregation and educate their children. Their legacy remains woven into the parish identity.
The church welcomes visitors during religious services and is open to those interested in viewing the Gothic architecture and historical interior. Check ahead before visiting since access is primarily available during scheduled services.
The parish constructed its own frame schoolhouse in 1888, which was later replaced by a larger brick building in 1924 for teaching needs. This expansion reveals how quickly the community grew and expanded its educational mission.
