Stokes State Forest

Stokes State Forest is a nature reserve spanning the Kittatinny Mountain Ridge with freshwater streams, diverse hiking routes, and elevated terrain throughout. The landscape features thick forests mixed with open areas and waterways that shape the terrain.

The forest was established in the early 1900s as land was acquired for conservation purposes. During the 1930s, major development and trail work reshaped the property into a public destination.

The forest holds deep roots with the Lenni-Lenape people, who lived off the land long before European settlers arrived. Their presence shaped how people understood and used these woods.

The forest offers designated camping areas with basic facilities and numerous marked trails of varying difficulty. Bring sturdy footwear and plan for changing terrain as you move through the woods.

A specialized section of the forest protects rare plants and animals in their natural setting. This area also displays geological features carved by ancient glacial activity.
