Sussex County Courthouse and the Circle, Georgian courthouse in Georgetown, Delaware
The Sussex County Courthouse is a two-story brick structure with a prominent tower, large windows, and decorative cornices situated at The Circle in Georgetown. The building continues to function as an active court and houses various judicial and government offices.
Philadelphia architect William Strickland designed the courthouse, which was constructed between 1837 and 1840 on the site of an earlier judicial building. Subsequent renovations over the decades modified its appearance while it remained a key local courthouse.
The courthouse and its surrounding circle serve the community as a central meeting point for local events and civic activities. People gather here regularly for celebrations and important public occasions.
The building is easily reached on foot from downtown Georgetown and remains accessible to the public. Visitors should be aware it is an active courthouse where legal proceedings take place throughout the day.
An 1914 renovation significantly enlarged the original tower and added columns to the front facade. Later modifications in the 1970s emphasized the Georgian architectural elements that define its current appearance.
