Tappan Zee Playhouse

Tappan Zee Playhouse at 20 South Broadway was a theater with Neo-Classical design featuring two main sections: an audience building in front and a converted stable in back serving as the stage area. The entire structure held around 1,114 seats and occupied a prominent downtown location.

The building opened in 1911 as the Broadway Theater and served the community for decades as an entertainment venue. It operated as both a vaudeville house and movie theater before being demolished in 2004.

The playhouse drew prominent performers and served as a gathering place for entertainment in town. People came here to watch shows and be part of the local arts scene.

The theater was located on South Broadway in downtown Nyack and easy to find. The site was registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, marking its importance as a historic location.

The stage building originated as a 19th-century stable that was incorporated into the overall theater structure during construction in 1911. This unusual combination made the playhouse a distinctive example of adaptive reuse.
