Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge

Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 51,000 acres of wetlands, forests, and open water along the Tennessee River, extending across three distinct units.

The refuge, established in 1945 following environmental changes from agricultural practices, now maintains protected habitats for numerous wildlife species.

The refuge serves as an educational center where visitors learn about wildlife conservation through programs and exhibits at the visitor center opened in 2014.

Visitors can access multiple observation points and trails throughout the refuge, with seasonal closures from November 15 to March 15 to protect wintering waterfowl.

The refuge supports 300 bird species, 51 mammal species, 89 reptiles and amphibians, and 144 fish species across its diverse ecological zones.
