Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building, Federal judiciary office building in Capitol Hill, United States.
The Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building is a federal office complex in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., just steps from Union Station. It serves as the administrative home of the federal judiciary, housing offices that support the operation of courts across the country.
The building opened in 1992 on a site that had previously been used as a surface parking lot near the Capitol. It was developed through a public-private arrangement that was later resolved with the property returning fully to federal hands.
The building is named after Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Justice to serve on the Supreme Court. Visitors passing through the entrance see his name on the facade, a reference to one of the most important figures in American civil rights law.
The building sits right next to Union Station, making it easy to reach by subway or bus from most parts of the city. Access inside is generally limited to federal employees and those with appointments, so most visitors experience it from the outside.
The complex was financed through a 30-year lease with private developers rather than built outright with federal funds, which was unusual for a government facility at the time. When the lease ended, ownership transferred to the federal government without an additional purchase.
